How to Create a Stress Free Life

I don't stress no more, all I do is this...😜

That was my version of Cardi B's Bodak Yellow. Get it?
...ok, moving on. 😐

There were several times in my life when I was literally sick from stress. Though mostly related to my job, I would absolutely dread going into work. I would become anxious and I could feel my blood pressure going through the roof. I thought that massages would somehow fix it, but that wasn't the answer. Each time I'd just come back with more knots. Eventually I figured out that I was trying to fix the symptoms and not the problem.

I addition to moving to a less stressful job, I implemented the following habits and practices into my life that have allowed me to live stress free! No more dreading my morning or going into work. I've created a lifestyle that fosters peace and tranquility. Here are my 5 habits to create a stress free life!
  1.  Exercising consistently. You absolutely knew that this one was coming. When you exercise, your body releases a chemical called endorphins. These endorphins not only activate receptors in the brain that minimize discomfort, but they also trigger a feeling of euphoria and well-being. It's like a built in glass of wine for you ladies who sip. If you're like me, exercise probably isn't what you're jumping out of bed to do. However, if you want to eliminate stress in your life, exercise is one way. I exercise at least 5 days a week for 30 mins in the wee hours of the morning before my body can realize what it's doing. This gets my day off to a great start, with energy and a positive attitude.

  2. Journal. Journaling has been a practice that I implemented many moons ago. I realized that when I was stressed or very emotional about something, verbalizing my feelings wasn't always feasible (or the right thing to do in the moment). Instead, I started writing-- which eventually lead to blogging. Nonetheless, it provided an alternative outlet for expressing my emotions such that they weren't bottled up, causing stress to fester in my body. Though I'm not as intentional about journaling as I once was, if I feel stressed about something, I will always go for my journal to write out my thoughts...or to just scribble.

  3. Start meditating. To be clear, I'm not referring to Angela Basset's chanting scene in What's Love Got to Do with It. Instead I'm talking about a combination of breathing exercises, prayer, and reciting scriptures. Would you believe that my former employer paid for me to go to a training on meditation? For about 4 hours, I sat in a dimly lit room and learned circular breathing and affirmations to eliminate stress. Since this training, my go to in a moment of anxiety or restlessness are those very breathing exercises. In addition, I recite scriptures and engage in consistent prayer throughout the day.

  4. De-clutter. De-cluttering is more than just ridding your work space of junk, but it also means ridding your life of the same. I absolutely cannot function in a messy area. It will immediately trigger me to stress out. Therefore, I make it a habit to clean up my work space throughout the day and before I leave the office. As for my life... Quasi-annually, I do a social media purge where I unfriend, block, or unfollow those who do not bring positivity into my space. Make cleaning and purging a part of your regular routine and watch how your mood (and productivity) improves.

  5. Pick up a hobby. Having a creative outlet is another great way to eliminate stress in your. There's nothing like looking forward to doing something that you enjoy. For me, it's writing and sewing. Each week, I set aside time to do both. It gives my brain a break from all of the thinking that I have to do during the work day or when I'm working for my brand. Find something that will bring your enjoyment and integrate that into your week.
